We’ve all heard the saying “The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears, and the ocean.”
Midwesterners can appreciate the first two, no questions asked, with our defiant, bootstrapping, and can-do attitudes. We don’t like being told we can’t do something, and we hate it even more when we’re told we shouldn’t. We rise to the occasion when our beliefs are at stake and put work in - blood, sweat, and tears.
So what happens when you get a group of Midwesterners together who are passionate about the third cure? When we say we want to do something about it? How about when people say “but you’re 6 hours away from the nearest ocean”?
We say So what? and then we get work done.
Ocean Clean Apparel is an Ohio-based apparel company that believes that you don’t need to be coastal to actively work to protect and conserve of our oceans.
We know what you’re thinking. How does an inland clothing company have anything to do with saving our oceans? So glad you asked. Take a seat.
300 million tons of plastic is produced and consumed every day. Half of that is used only once (we see you, Ziploc) and then it’s thrown away. Researchers who are smarter than us estimate that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans every year which, spoiler alert, means that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. Much of this plastic starts in inland waterways and is carried through major rivers to our oceans.
Ocean Clean is focused on doing two things to reduce and reverse this outcome.
- 10% of our net profits is donated to The Ocean Cleanup Project, an organization that we believe can make the biggest and quickest impact.
- We’re creating unapologetic awareness around the careless use and disposal of plastics through our brand.
- We’re selling sustainably sourced and manufactured materials to create cool threads.
TLDR; One item purchased = one pound of trash cleaned up from our Oceans.
It’s that simple.
